Cheers to 10 Years of the Cisco Unified Computing System

UCS is a world-record breaking, cohesive system designed to reduce total cost of ownership and increase business agility – and this month, it’s celebrating its 10th birthday. There is nothing I enjoy more than celebrating the achievements of friends – especially when those achievements mean raising a glass of champagne or enjoying a piece of cake (or even better, both). Cisco and NetApp have been friends, or in corporate speak, partners, for nine years. Today I want to celebrate my friend’s IT achievement and toast the Cisco Unified Computer System (UCS), further reinforcing what my friend Ranjeet Sudan wrote about birthdays and balance sheets.

Happy tenth birthday to Cisco’s UCS, the next-generation datacenter platform which brought two powerhouse companies together to complete the IT solution that UCS set out to solve. FlexPod® is a converged infrastructure solution from NetApp and Cisco that uses NetApp storage arrays and Cisco UCS servers, both of which are managed in a consistent operational model with NetApp ONTAP and Cisco UCS Manager software.

A Decade of Success

Birthdays are a time for reflecting on past achievements while looking towards the future. So, let’s look at the successes that UCS has achieved through FlexPod, and how age has only made this solution better:

  1. More than $10 billion in revenue in nine years
  2. Since launch, there have been three new customers added every day
  3. FlexPod is deployed in more than 9,000 customer sites
  4. Over the past two years, FlexPod has gained more than five points of market share
  5. FlexPod now has more than 170 validated designs (and growing)
  6. FlexPod is now offering workloads such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), EPIC and MEDITECH EHR

The Next Decade

The future of IT is in the cloud, specifically the hybrid cloud. Eighty-three percent of enterprise workloads will be in the cloud by 2020.[i] With concerns surrounding speed, cost, and agility, customers are making the choice to move workloads to the public cloud. The leading factor driving public cloud adoption is the desire to digitally transform enterprises (63 percent), followed by the pursuit of IT agility (62 percent).

Hybrid cloud is currently the reality for many organizations, and certainly it is the future of IT. FlexPod is the perfect platform to be at the center of this multi-year trend.

  • 83 percent of workloads today are virtualized
  • 60 percent of large enterprises run VMs in the public cloud
  • 65 percent of organizations have a hybrid cloud strategy today[iii]

FlexPod converged infrastructure is an industry standard, incorporating advanced cloud services with the only hybrid, multi-cloud converged infrastructure stack that leverages the NetApp Data Fabric. FlexPod clients can also employ Cisco CloudCenter™ with FlexPod software to securely implement and manage applications in multiple data centers, private cloud, and public cloud environments. FlexPod is built for now and the future.

So, happy birthday, UCS! You look great at ten, and with readily consumable FlexPod solutions being developed every month, built on reliable, tested technology, you’ll continue to be a celebrated solution for the next ten!
